So Sew!

So I finally sewed the word sew in bright colours for Carol's birthday quilt. The first hard part of this exercise was remembering I had promised to do this (sorry, Carol!). The second challenge will be getting this into the mail this week. I hope it isn't too late!

In July there will be at least 3 AAQI quilts for auction made by members of this group ! Brenda and Sujata's quilts are in there and I'm so happy my liberated 9-patch is there too.

A long overdue finish from two or three challenges ago

Some of you may remember this quilt made for Tonya's earlier class blog.

I finished the top back then

but had trouble getting the quilting finished.

Now it's officially done and gifted

and I thought I would share it with you here,

even though it's not Amish.

It is wonky, though.

Some quilts just need a little breathing space

and growing room.

Illuminated letters?

I'm making this for a friend who just got a mid-life academic appointment.

To celebrate his new career as a professor of theology,

I'm making him a small word quilt for his office.

He picked the Latin quote: fides quaerens intellectum,

which means faith seeking understanding.

All the letters are made from word fabric, and the letters are about 4.5 inches high.

I wasn't happy with how much empty space there was in the top row,

so I experimented a bit with a filler.

The large f was originally a cross, but I decided to make it the first letter of the quote,

and invoke a sense of medieval manuscripts with illuminated letters.

I'm going to embroider around the light brown f in black and gold,

to embellish it a bit, as well as making the letter pop a bit more.

It was fun to be working with letters again.

It's been awhile for me.

another B

As I was thinking about curly, straight, and wonky B's this popped into my head as I read Brenda's profile.  
Now I need to go tell her I made a B!!!

B Bee, anyone?

I've been watching you folks play with letters and I'm inviting you to experiment with the letter B.

Here's my attempt at a formal, sort of Times Roman font

then a cursive one, made with curved piecing, with lots of script running over the letter

and a wonky letter, with some messages inside.
